Whose Son is this Man?

98

When David went to fight Goliath, it was his first foray into public life, and both his brother and King Saul scoffed at his ability to save Israel from the Philistines. But David trusted in God to help him, and obtained a great victory.

King Saul inquired around as to whose son David was. After killing Goliath, David informed Saul that he was the son of Jesse.

All this reminds us of our Lord Jesus' great victory over death and hell at Calvary - for He was mocked as unable to save us. Furthermore, the question was constantly raised: whose son is this man? In Christ's great victory, like David's before, there is a final declaration of whose Son He is.

Mary was promised by Gabriel that Jesus would be the Son of God, conceived of the Holy Ghost.

John the Baptist declared Jesus to be both the Lamb of God and the Son of God at the beginning of His ministry.

Those whom He saved - from blindness and from the grave - knew He is the Son of God.

The Devil scoffed at the idea that Jesus is the Son of God, and demanded that He prove it. Jesus did not succumb to Satan's demands, because doing so would have proved the very opposite!

The Jews objected to Christ's identification as the Son of God, and their leaders condemned Him to die because of it.

Like David's victory before, it was at Jesus' great victory at Calvary that His identity was proven. Even His executioner declared that, though He was condemned for claiming it, the very manner of His death proved He is the Son of God.

When He rose victorious from the grave, there was no longer any question whose son this man was. Paul exults that Christ is declared the Son of God with Power by His Resurrection!
