LD 36 - You Can Be Freed from Blasphemy

77 ( 40 | 37 )

Have you ever overheard someone talking about you in a way that suggested that they cared little about you? Or has the way others have slandered you ever come back to you second-hand? How people talk about you—especially when they don't think you are listening—can reveal what they truly think of you.

This is also true of how we talk about God. If could see God we would never blaspheme. But we don't yet see God. We live by faith. And so we aren't always careful to talk about God with the reverence his majesty deserves. So God kindly warns us in the third commandment to use his name well.

The first four commandments informs our love for God. The first commandment teaches who to worship. The second teaches how to worship. The third teaches the language of worship. We must not use God's name as if it were inconsequential. He always hears how we use his name. And he will not allow his name to be used in vain.
