A Confrontation Between Two Kingdoms

41

The words, actions, and even the worldviews described in our text today took place nearly 2,000 years ago, and yet the words and actions are remarkably contemporary to and applicable for us in our day. As our Savior stood before the Roman governor, issues such as the person and office of Christ, the nature of the Kingdom of God, and whether or not one could know the truth were all touched upon. In the intervening years, these questions have been asked and answered in a large variety of circumstances. Even most immediately, questions about the relationship of the church to the state have been suddenly and unexpectedly thrust upon us. Governor Pilate is a prime example of the post-modern man. He is interested in the deeper questions of life, but he despairs of knowing the truth or even knowing if truth exists. Here, continuing a long list of ironies, the cynical Roman Governor seeks answers to his questions while not realizing that not only does the prisoner before him speak the truth; He is the embodiment of truth itself! – Pastor Schlegel
