The Bread of Life Discourse - Jesus and the Disciples

This last section of chapter six forms a sort of epilogue to the discourse in the Capernaum synagogue. It recounts Jesus' interaction with His followers after He finished addressing the Jews. This section is a fitting conclusion to the context and shows that even Jesus' disciples, including perhaps some among the Twelve, stumbled over His claims. In this way John highlighted the fact that virtually all who embraced Jesus as the Messiah did so on the basis of flawed understanding and misguided expectations. In the end, Jesus' followers as well as His opponents missed Him because they insisted upon their own messianic notions.
