Smart Treasure Hunting

18

In the Sermon on the Mount Jesus describes the level of righteousness that He requires of anyone who is His follower. In this sermon we look at the section found in chapter 6:19-24. In this section Jesus describes people as treasure hunters. He says we are going around accumulating treasure and storing it for the future. Everyone is doing this, but He separates people into one of two groups by how they do it. We'll call the two groups the smart treasure hunters and the foolish treasure hunters. It makes a difference what kind of treasure we collect and how we store it. He encourages all of us who desire to be His followers to be smart treasure hunters. A smart treasure hunter chases treasure with eternal value. Jesus wants us to be smart treasure hunters so He does three things in this passage: first of all He describes what a smart treasure hunter looks like; then he illustrates what motivates a smart treasure hunter; and lastly, He tells us what actions a smart treasure hunter takes.
