Once For All

61

The whole NT speaks of the death of Jesus Christ as a sacrifice, but that truth is especially emphasized in the book of Hebrews, where the realities of the New Covenant are compared and contrasted with the shadowy pictures and promises of the Old Covenant. Our English word comes from Latin, and means to make holy/devoted to God. The words used in the original languages of the Bible are a little less noble and a lot more blunt. They mean to slaughter. The sacrifice is a victim and to sacrifice is to kill. The passage before us reveals the sufficiency, efficacy and finality of Christ's death as an offering for sin, once for all, never to be repeated...
