A prayer for power
Series Colossians
What does a walk worthy of the Lord look like? How does one begin to meet the high standard of holiness required of the child of God in the face not only of our imperfections, but also of our infirmities?
In order to stand, and to advance, Paul seeks a blessing: that the saints might be strengthened, having the capacity to accomplish their task communicated to them.
The measure in which Paul requests the blessing is the measure of divinity: he is praying that the Lord God himself would make the weak strong for the purpose of glorifying him.
That strengthening will manifest itself in patience (active endurance) and longsuffering (a Godlike response in the face of provocation) characterised by Christian joy.
Until we reckon with our own feebleness, and seek strength from God Almighty to pursue holiness, we shall not please the Lord.
