The books of Samuel long ago were contained in one scroll and called "books of the kingdom," stylistic elements which enabled the reader to more easily pick up on the unified message of the book. These books chart two major transitions in redemptive history: from mobile tabernacle to permanent dwelling (1 Samuel 1 and 2 Samuel 24) and from judges to a covenant king. This message illuminates the development of these twin themes and places them within the context of the unfolding narrative in the books of Samuel and concludes with several applications designed to guide the coming exposition of these great books.
