The Difficult Doctrine of Divine Immutability
Series The Attributes of God
1,477
In verse 15, God Himself says, “I regret that I have made Saul king.” But in verse 29, Samuel says, “the Glory of Israel will not lie or have regret, for he is not a man, that he should have regret.” Then in the chapter's closing statement, Scripture tells us, “the LORD regretted that he had made Saul king over Israel” (ESV).
How do we reconcile those three statements, all in quick succession in a single passage? Is the tension deliberate? Was Samuel's belief in divine immutability mistaken? Or is there another, better, explanation for the tension? That's what we'll explore this morning.
