The Essence of Vicarious Atonement

Isaiah 53:4-6 form a separate section of this wonderful and unique portion of Scripture.

At the heart of these three verses lies one of the most fundamental doctrines of the gospel, namely, the doctrine of vicarious atonement. This doctrine presents to us the truth that one, Jehovah's Servant, will suffer and die in the place of others.

This doctrine is detested by many who know not its importance and value not its truth.

This doctrine should not have been a strange truth to those to whom these words were written. It is not as if this is the first time it has been introduced in the Old Testament Scriptures. The Jews, God's ancient people, were very familiar with this truth.

Their sacrificial system distinctly and particularly set forth this truth in repeated fashion. All the blood shedding of those repeated sacrifices of bulls and goats, calves and heifers were to teach this truth - they were offered in place of the worshipper, Lev 16:30.
