Theology of the New England Puritans (1st lecture)

666

This course will trace the development of the theology of the Pilgrims and Puritans who settled in what later was called New England between the 1620s and the 1730s or the colonial period. The focus will be on the rapid transition from the separatist views of the first settlers, the Pilgrims, to the non-separatist Congregationalist views of the Puritans who arrived later. We will deal with subjects such as civil and church covenants, criteria for church membership, the place of children in the church, soteriology and the relationship between church and state. Special attention will be paid to the Antinomian Controversy, the Half-way Covenant and the Puritan Vision of a Christian Commonwealth.
