I.The Vicarious Suffering of Christ v.18
A.The Cause of His Death- Sin,He died for all the sins of His people.
B.The Nature of His Death-once, the just for the unjust. He is holy and just, we were unholy and unjust
C.The Purpose of His Death-that He might bring us(His elect) to God. This is the work of the Holy Spirit because of the finished work of Christ.
D.The Results of His Death-All His people are now justified, they shall be regenerated and glorified.
II.The Ministry of Christ in the Days of Noah vv.19-20 These verses are used to teach the false doctrine of purgatory. Christ did not descend into Hell when He died, His Spirit went to be with the Father. It is that same Spirit by which He preached in Noah before the flood.
III.The Message of Baptism-v.21 Scriptural baptism is immersion, it does not save from sin. It is a figure of that which does, the death, burial and resurrection of Christ. The ark was a type of Christ, who is the only means of the answering of a good conscience to God. His blood washes away our sins. Rev.1:5
IV.The Victorious Christ v.22 Christ was resurrected by the power of God, has ascended to His throne in Heaven and exalted at God's right hand "far above all principality, and power..and every name that is named, not only in this world, but also in that which is to come."(Eph.1:21) He is now the Sovereign Ruler over the universe and has defeated all the enemies of His people, Satan, sin and death
