Ten Promises of Future Blessing

244

Each point begins with “thus saith the Lord” or similar phraseology.

Each point was meant to encourage “the remnant” that was in the land.

Each point spoke of a still greater day beyond the lifetime of this remnant.

  1. v. 1-2 -- Jealousy
Here God promises and reaffirms his loyalty to Israel. Zech. 1:14-15.

  2. v. 3 – The Return of God
Edmund Clowney “In the Old Testament the centre for God's praise was Mount Zion…In the New Testament Jesus brings the fulfillment of that picture. No longer is Jerusalem the centre for worship, for Christ is the true temple…We now come in worship to the Heavenly Zion where Jesus is. Because heaven is now the centre of our worship, there can be no earthly sanctuary.”

  3. v. 4-5 – The Promise of a Long and Full Life

  4. v. 6 – The sureness of the promises of God.

  5. v. 7-8 – Re-gathering the People of God
    Isaiah 11:11-12; 2 Corinthians 6:16-18

  6. v. 9-13 – The Promise of Better Days Ahead.

  7. v. 14-17 – God's Resolve to do good to His people is not divorced from their obedience. Micah 2:1

  8. v. 18-19 – Here is the answer to the original question

  9. v. 20-22 – The promise of a large incoming of the Gentiles.

  10. v. 23 – Israel was the nation that had the truth.
This is known as the Deuteronomic Ideal. Deuteronomy 4:1-8.
