Walking on Water

38

As always, the scripture teaches us things about God and things about ourselves. The incident of Jesus walking on water teaches us many things about God, as revealed in Christ, but one is that Christ delights to reveal Himself gradually to His people. The disciples thought they were seeing a ghost and cried out before Christ revealed Himself. In the garden, after the resurrection, Mary thought Jesus was a gardener before He revealed Himself to her. Jesus walked on the Emmaus road with two disciples and spent some time with them before revealing His true identity. Another thing we learn from this passage is that believers will not always have "smooth sailing" in this life. The wind was against them. They were straining at the oars. In this life we will have tribulation. Things will not be easy. Sometimes the wind will be against us and our progress will be slow. But throughout it all, Christ is still interceding for us, as He interceded in prayer for the disciples while they were straining at the oars.
