The King and His Adversary, Part 2
Series Gospel of Matthew
129
As the devil again tempts Jesus to sin, He uses another of his old schemes - to make men doubt whether God really keeps His promises. When we do so, we often are looking for reassurances from God. In essence, we are asking God to prove Himself to us, rather than taking Him at His word. This is what Jesus means when He says we are not to tempt God. Faith is not believing what God proves to our senses and doubting reason. Faith is believing what God says, using the sureness of His word to contradict our doubts.
