Mother's Day Miracle

813

The setting to this passage is important. In chapter 14 John the Baptist was beheaded, and so things were getting tough, but Jesus fed the 5000, showing that He could meet the needs of Israel. He walked on water to show that He was Lord over creation and the Divine Messiah, because He was superior to any other prophet who had only parted the waters (Moses – Exodus 14 / Joshua – Joshua 3:14-17 / Elijah – 2 Kings 2:8 / Elisha – 2 Kings 2:13-14 / cf. Job 9:8, Matthew 14:32-33). In chapter 15 Jesus challenged the teachings of the Pharisees and scribes because those teachings had been elevated to the status of Scripture. Then, following that confrontation, Jesus went out to the Gentiles, and met this woman and delivered her child as a sign of salvation to all peoples who would believe in the Jewish Messiah. Then, as He came back to the region of Galilee, He fed the 4000, a sign that He could meet the needs of all nations.

First Jesus wouldn’t even answer, then His disciples try to get Him to act and He tells them it isn’t His business, and then she gets all the way to Him and begs, and Jesus seems to insult her. That wasn’t actually the case, though.

Listen through to hear the true depth of this important passage of scripture....
