Rivers of Judgment

155

Rivers can be the life-blood of the nation. This is certainly the case with the River Nile in Egypt. But the Egyptians perverted their dependence on the river by worshipping the creature rather than the Creator. The first plague which the Lord visited on Egypt under Moses was to strike at the river and turn it into blood. It has been the same through the ages that people, as described in Romans 1:22-25 do not love God but prefer to worship their own gods. Today that means very much the worship of self. Yet just as the Lord struck at the very thing the Egyptians had made into their god, so the Lord today brings a nation low if it worships man. Far from being happier, man actually suffers and the worship of self has led to life actually being cheaper and being treated with less respect.

As Christians we have to be careful that we do not allow anything else to take the place of the Lord. Sometimes loyalty to denominations can be put ahead of loyalty to the Lord. We must learn to make the Lord our source of contentment by remembering to thank Him for all things; keeping a light hold on the things of this life; by being content with what we have; and by putting spiritual blessings ahead of material blessings.
