A Broken and Contrite Heart

Often we cannot protect the little ones in our care, due to weakness, distraction, or lack of resources. A helpless lady had to stand by as her dearly loved cats were taken and destroyed by wicked persons. She had no power to save them.

They never ran to her for protection, which she could not have given them. So too sinners will never come to Christ out of blindness and pride and rebellion.

But the Father draws us to Him. We are given a new birth that causes us to hear the Gospel and believe it, as we flee to the Savior.

With what attitude ought we to come to Jesus? Another picture gives the idea: a poor, miserable, starving kitten crawls to the feet of a strong man, and lays its little head atop his heavy work shoe.

So too we ought to come to Jesus as broken, helpless, pitiful people, throwing ourselves at His feet, seeking mercy.

Jesus died for us when we were without strength, when we were lost in our sins. We come to Him Who has all power over us, even to judge us.

It is amazing that the One with such power is the very One Who offers forgiveness! The Scriptures tell us God receives a broken and contrite heart.

We often walk away from stray starving animals who approach us, and we have that right. But Jesus has promised He'll never cast out anybody that comes to Him!

Jesus expects us to come to Him, not as the rich young ruler, self-sufficient, smug in our good works, needing only advice; but rather as helpless babes without pretense, in need of blessing.

Amazing that God should manifest Himself in flesh in Jesus, and thus become so easily approachable by pitiful sinners!

At Calvary, Jesus appeared weak, but He was strong to save us!
