A Sermon of Repentance

199

Although we may erroneously tend to view repentance as something that occurs only at the time of conversion, it is also in fact essential to the lifelong process of sanctification. After recognizing sin in our lives, the first step in mortifying the flesh is repentance. Arthur Dent was rector of South Shoeberry, Essex, for twenty-seven years. What follows is the transcript of a sermon preached at Leigh-on-Sea in 1582. It was reprinted at least twenty-two times by 1638. His exposition shows with precision and clarity the nature of true repentance, and the many occasions we have for its constant and renewed expression. “I tell you, Nay: but, except ye repent, ye shall all likewise perish.” Luke 13:5
