The Holy Spirit in the Old Testament

225

In the Old Testament the Holy Spirit preserved the Law of God through the nation of Israel. John tells us that in the Old Testament period the Holy Spirit was “not yet given” (John 7:39). This statement is not about the being of the Holy Spirit, but of His work as it related to Christ. The Holy Spirit was active in the application and progress of redemptive history. The Scripture indicates that the presence of the Holy Spirit in the Old Testament was given for the purpose of preserving truth through the nation of Israel until the time of Messiah;
•Nationally; not individually (Jeremiah 31:29-34; Ezekiel 36:25-27).
•To some; not “all flesh” (Numbers 11:29)
•Temporarily; not “abiding for ever” (John 1:32-33; 14:16)
