Worship, Idolatry and the Meaning of Man
Series 1 John
42
The greatest threat to the meaning of life is idolatry. Idolatry is the act of worshipping anything smaller than God, or making any aspect of creation into an ultimate end that we live for. Idolatry is the enemy of worship and therefore the enemy of human meaning. The lie of the devil is that God is too small for a person to live for - but the reality is that God is the only thing big enough to live for. As we live for God our capacity for all other things is greatly increased. John's final instruction to his congregation (1 Jn 5:21) is to keep themselves from idols - because an idol cannot satisfy or save.
