HERE WE STAND: LIMITED ATONEMENT
THE DESIGN OR GOD'S INTENT IN THE ATONEMENT
- Arminian answer – Christ died for all men providing them with sufficient grace to cooperate with God (Jn. 3:13; 1 Jn. 2:2).
- Amyrauldian answer – Christ died to provide salvation for all men, but applies it only to the elect (1 Ti. 2:4; 2 Pe. 3:9).
- Calvinist answer – Christ died to secure the salvation of the elect (Mt.1:21; 1 Ti. 1:15).
THE NATURE OF CHRIST'S DEATH
- Substitutionary sacrifice – Heb. 9:26; “anti” Mk. 10:45; “huper” Gal. 3:13
- Penal Imputation – Is. 53:4-6, 8, 12; 2 Co. 5:21
Propitiation – appeasement of God's wrath by satisfying justice (Ro. 3:25; 1 Jn. 2:2; 4:10).
Redemption – deliverance from the slavery of sin by payment of a price (Mk. 10:45; Ac. 20:28).
Reconciliation – relationship between God and man changed from enmity to peace (Ro. 5:10; 1 Co. 5:18-20).
THE EXTENT OF THE ATONEMENT OR FOR WHOM DID CHRIST DIE?
- Calvinist – the elect Is. 53:8; Mt. 1:21; 20:28; Jn. 10:11; Ac. 20:28; Eph. 5:25).
- Arminian/Amyrauldian – the world (Jn. 3:16; 1 Jn. 2:2; 2 Co. 5:14-15; 2 Pe. 2:1).
APPLICATION OF LIMITED ATONEMENT
The Father accomplishes His purposes, and is neither frustrated nor confused.
Christ's death actually saves; His blood is not shed in vain.
The Holy Spirit will give success in evangelism.
