HERE WE STAND: LIMITED ATONEMENT

THE DESIGN OR GOD'S INTENT IN THE ATONEMENT

  • Arminian answer – Christ died for all men providing them with sufficient grace to cooperate with God (Jn. 3:13; 1 Jn. 2:2).
  • Amyrauldian answer – Christ died to provide salvation for all men, but applies it only to the elect (1 Ti. 2:4; 2 Pe. 3:9).
  • Calvinist answer – Christ died to secure the salvation of the elect (Mt.1:21; 1 Ti. 1:15).

THE NATURE OF CHRIST'S DEATH

  • Substitutionary sacrifice – Heb. 9:26; “anti” Mk. 10:45; “huper” Gal. 3:13
  • Penal Imputation – Is. 53:4-6, 8, 12; 2 Co. 5:21

Propitiation – appeasement of God's wrath by satisfying justice (Ro. 3:25; 1 Jn. 2:2; 4:10).
Redemption – deliverance from the slavery of sin by payment of a price (Mk. 10:45; Ac. 20:28).
Reconciliation – relationship between God and man changed from enmity to peace (Ro. 5:10; 1 Co. 5:18-20).

THE EXTENT OF THE ATONEMENT OR FOR WHOM DID CHRIST DIE?

  • Calvinist – the elect Is. 53:8; Mt. 1:21; 20:28; Jn. 10:11; Ac. 20:28; Eph. 5:25).
  • Arminian/Amyrauldian – the world (Jn. 3:16; 1 Jn. 2:2; 2 Co. 5:14-15; 2 Pe. 2:1).

APPLICATION OF LIMITED ATONEMENT

  1. The Father accomplishes His purposes, and is neither frustrated nor confused.

  2. Christ's death actually saves; His blood is not shed in vain.

  3. The Holy Spirit will give success in evangelism.
