The Groaning and the Glory

138 ( 119 | 19 )

Paul now places before us the glorious destiny of our sonship as those who will be wholly conformed to the likeness of Christ.
This destiny is neither pious illusion nor wishful thinking but the certain goal to which the whole creation is moving.
Neither our present sufferings, nor the birth pains of a creation bearing God's curse are reason to lose sight of the liberating glory to come.
The groaning of creation, like a woman in the pains of childbirth, is not without eager expectation.
We too, who have tasted of the Spirit, groan inwardly, yearning for the 'redemption of our bodies' when we will be enabled to fully and visibly share in the wholly glorified humanity of Jesus Christ as wholly adopted sons of the Father - the very goal that He has destined us for.
Like the creation, we too are to wait patiently for what we do not yet have - this is the dynamic of hope by which we are sustained and kept buoyant.
Yes, we know weakness but even here the Spirit comes to our aid as He prays within us with groans that are too deep for words.
The creation is groaning, we are groaning and the Spirit is groaning.
And the wordless sighs of the Spirit are answered by this unstoppable God who works in all things for our destined good and glory.
