The Hero

Thesis: In our broken world, everyone is looking for a hero - we even have developed superheroes to satisfy our urge for this make believe "happily ever after". But Mark's gospel presents the only true hero who was and is and will forever be.

I. IDENTIFICATION OF JESUS CHRIST (v. 1)

• Writes to Romans
• His letter is message about Christ,
  not Bible stories.
• Shows John the Baptist foretold Jesus' coming
• Jesus = God's Savior, Annointed, God's Son

II. PROCLAMATION OF JOHN THE BAPTIST (v. 2-3)

• Mark quotes various Old Testament passages
  to tie and validate prophecies to John's
  announcing of Jesus as the Messiah.

III. THE PRESENTATION OF THE SON OF GOD (v. 7)

• John validates Jesus' Messiaship showing his:
  Superiority, eternality and exaltation.
• In every way, Christ was not only greater,
  but the greatest, the Holy One of God.

IV. THE PROMISE OF THE HOLY SPIRIT (v. 8)

• God's Spirit will dwell in and among His people
• Powerful Person who :
  • Engaged in Creation
  • Revealed God's purposes to Prophets
  • Raised Judges
  • Conceived Son in Mary
  • Enabled Christ
  • Helps, comforts, guides, .... us

CONCLUSION: The Holy Spirit was given by God to testify of Jesus - we should embrace such love of God, walk by the Spirit, be filled with the Spirit, and long to be conformed to His image.
