The Biblical Doctrine of Sin
Series The Book of Romans
This passage deals with 5 words related to sin:
Humanity
Sin affects all of humanity. (Romans 5:12). Sin came into the world before there was any Jew or Gentile. There are a multitude of objections to this. If you reject the fact that you sinned when Adam sinned, you will also have to reject Christ's work that saves us. Sin is an oppression on top of us.Depravity
Our depravity is total. Total depravity has been misunderstood. It doesn't refer to how deep we are in sin but how broadly sin affects us. What does sin do to the human condition?
- The mind is darkened
- The will is enslaved
- The emotions are broken
Inability
We are not able to do good or please God. No good deed can give us salvation. We are not saved because of our morality but by God's grace. We are unable to fix the problem of sin for ourselves or others.Iniquity
- Our depravity works out in our words
- Our depravity works out in our actions
- Guilty
We are worthy of God's wrath and guilty before God.
The good news in the blackness of our humanity is that there is hope for all who come to trust in God.
