Charlemagne and the Holy Roman Empire

Gene opens with the story of Karl, King of the Franks, and how he became the unlikely Emperor in the West and the first Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire, Charlemagne. One notable controversy during Charlemagne's reign was over religious icons.

After Charlemagne's death the empire is split up by his sons, but still is considered the Holy Roman Empire.
