The Superiority of the New Covenant

247 ( 131 | 116 )

Unexpectedly, Jesus breaks from the Passover traditions and introduces a new ritual. His followers were to share bread and wine as an act of remembrance of his death, which was just hours away.

The motto "Remember the Sabbath Day" was to vanish away; the era of "Remember the Lord's death" had come. There was now a new and better covenant between God and men. The previous two significant ones—the Abrahamic and Mosaic—had an expiry date. When Jesus came, they ended.

The signs of the old covenants were circumcision and Sabbath-keeping. These were replaced by baptism and the Lord's Table commemoration (or "eucharist").

The Ten Commandments are described in the BIble as themselves being the old covenant. And we're told this old one was being scrapped, and this includes the whole Law of Moses. To be clear: Christians are not bound by the Ten Commandments, and using them as a "rule of life" undermines the new covenant Jesus brought in. Believers are free. They now serve Jesus Christ through a unique possession of the Holy Spirit. The letter of the Law kills, but the Spirit gives life.
