Jesus Is Greater Than the Prophets So You Need To Know the Son of God

In these two verses, the writer applies a fundamental truth – our faith or trust in someone is based on our knowledge of that person. Of course, our faith in Christ is a gift from God, but it comes by hearing the message of Christ. The message of Christ includes information about who He is and what He has done. The Holy Spirit of God takes that information and supernaturally applies it to our minds and souls to give us the gift of faith. As they suffered persecution, these Hebrew Christians needed greater knowledge of the Son of God so their faith would be strengthened. They had been raised in the Jewish religion and for their whole lives they had been taught about the prophets and what the prophets said. They had all of the books of the Old Testament in writing. But, at this point in history very few of the books of the New Testament had been written, and there were very few copies of the ones that had been written. So, these Christians were lacking in their knowledge of the Son of God, and they needed to know the Son of God as fully as possible.
