God Has Spoken

The Book of Hebrews is actually a letter to Jewish Christians that was probably written sometime before 70 AD. These Christians were threatened with severe persecution of all kinds, apparently even death. As a result, many of them appear to have been thinking about giving up their faith in Jesus Christ and going back to practicing the Jewish religion. So, the writer begins his letter by telling them some very basic things. You see, unless we know the basic things about God and about what He has said and done, it is very difficult for us to live our lives obeying God. Such lack of knowledge makes us spiritually weak, but following Christ in the face of temptation, suffering, or persecution demands spiritual strength. It is necessary for us to be reminded of these basic things regularly. Here, the writer of this letter reminds these Hebrew Christians, and us, that God has spoken. God has told us who He is. He has told us what He has done. He has told us what we must do. And, the big point the writer makes in these few words is that since God has spoken, you need to listen to what God says. That is the central theme of this message today -- you need to listen to what God says.
