Birthright for Sale

33

The struggle within Rebekah now sees the light of day. Neither Jacob nor Esau are painted in a flattering light. Jacob lives up to his reputation as a “heel-grabber,” and sees Esau’s desperation as an opportunity to be used to his own advantage. On the other hand, Esau, while understanding the importance of his birthright, is willing to trade it away for the impulse of the moment. Both of these characters point us to the promises that we inherited through the firstborn – the preeminent over all things – Jesus Christ.
