Neither Forsaken Nor Forgotten

The narration of a sermon delivered by C. H. Spurgeon, at the Metropolitan Tabernacle, Newington, London.

Mr. Spurgeon summarises his sermon thus: "My objective, in speaking upon the familiar and precious words of our text, is just this—Sometimes you and I get into the same sad condition as Zion was then in, and we fancy that God has forgotten us, so I want to show you that if we are believers in the Lord Jesus Christ, the Lord gives to us an answer similar to that which He gave to sorrowful Zion, “I have graven thee upon the palms of My hands.” Upon that short sentence I shall try now to speak to you."

He then proceeds to address firstly the fear that many feel, that they have been forgotten and forsaken.

Secondly he brings encouragement because of the comfort promised by the fact that God's rememberance of us is fulfilled in Christ, in that his eternal love for His people took Him to the cross, upon which Mr. Spurgeon comments - "Oh, how deeply the cruel gravers cut our names in Christ's dear hands! Thos nails that fastened Him to the cross were the graving tools ....... Yet the graving of which our text speaks is more than that, for the Lord Himself says, "I have graven thee upon the palms of my hands."

As he draws towards conclusion he comments on 'An Inspection Invited', in that we are asked to 'Behold', where he calls upon those who are tempted to think they are forgotten, to look and see what God has done and remember Christ consistently and practically.
