Justified by works

325
  1. An Apparent Contradiction

A. James does not discount the importance of faith.

James 2:22 You see that his faith and his actions were working together, and his faith was made complete by what he did.

B. Paul is asking how can we be saved, James does not address that here

C. James is asking, how can we know our faith is real. Paul agrees with James
Titus 1:16 They claim to know God, but by their actions they deny him. They are detestable, disobedient and unfit for doing anything good.

  1. A Faith that will not save (What faith is not)
James 2:14 What good is it, my brothers, if a man claims to have faith but has no deeds? Can such faith save him?
    A. False faith displays no love for the brethren.
15 Suppose a brother or sister is without clothes and daily food. 16 If one of you says to him, “Go, I wish you well; keep warm and well fed,” but does nothing about his physical needs, what good is it? 17 In the same way, faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead.

B. False faith reveals no love for God
Deuteronomy 6:4-5 Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God, the LORD is one. 5 Love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength.
