Being Filled With the Holy Spirit

222

Although generally unknown to most Christians, today is Pentecost Sunday. In light of that I thought it would be appropriate to bring a sermon on the Holy Spirit. Now, since that is an incredibly broad topic, I have chosen to preach on just one aspect of the Holy Spirit – namely, the command of the apostle Paul to be filled with the Spirit. This is a controversial subject in the modern church, because there is great disagreement on exactly what it means to be filled with the Holy Spirit. For example, the Pentecostal church views it quite differently than the Reformed church. I hope to clarify what it means by opening up the significance of the Day of Pentecost itself, and then I will follow that with a brief look at His work in the New Testament era. I will conclude with an exposition of Paul’s command to the believer to be filled with the Spirit. I hope this clarification will be helpful to everyone, for this is important for us to understand. We really can’t obey the command in a meaningful way if we don’t know what Paul is actually commanding. I have prayed that God will grant us insight and understanding from today’s sermon.
