Preparing For False Teachers
Main idea:
While God will soon defeat Satan, we are part of the means by which it will happen!
Cautionary Commands: We must prepare to deal with false teachers (17-19)
Alertness: Watch out for them (17a)
Those who cause divisions (17b)
Those who create obstacles contrary to the doctrine you have been taught (17c)
Avoidance: Avoid them (17d-18)
For such persons do not serve our Lord Christ, but their own appetites (18a)
For by smooth talk and flattery they deceive the hearts of the naïve (18b)
For your obedience is known to all (19a)
So that I rejoice over you (19b)
But I want you to be: (19c)
Wise concerning what is good (19c
Innocent as to what is evil (19d)
Confident Comfort: We must trust in His sovereignty and grace (20)
Prediction: The God of peace will soon crush Satan under your feet (20a)
Prayer wish: The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all (20b)
Application
We must be alert to false teachers—and avoid them!
We must trust in a sovereign God to bring about the defeat of Satan!
