Everything I Need for Life and Godliness I Possess Already

Peter links the life to come with godliness necessary in a single sentence seeming to clearly indicate that if one possesses eternal life they will display or be characterized by godliness. This is so serious that he goes to make the point that each of us should be making our election and calling sure by the ongoing work of adding to our faith. This is not to say Christ’s work was insufficient but just the opposite. It is sufficient to save us from our present sin in this life and the life to come.
