The Necessity of Faith in Jesus Christ

This passage contains a solemn warning to the opponents of Christ. Our Lord repeats Himself, declaring His heavenly origin, aims and affections. Also, He makes a striking contrast with the earthly origin, aims and affections of His detractors, telling them that they would die in their sins. They are not interested in truth but only seek to trap the Lord. We again see the depravity of man in their rejection of the Lord of Glory in their midst. Nevertheless, the Lord's call to belief in Him does yield fruit and many in the crowd did put their faith in Him.

Pastor Linehan shows us, throughout John's Gospel, how often we are called to put our trust in Jesus Christ. Sinners must acknowledge that Jesus is all that the Scriptures declare Him to be. We must put our confidence in His righteous sacrifice, alone, for our salvation. Those who persist in disbelief in the person and work of Christ will die in their sins. True believers and followers of Christ will receive His righteousness and eternal life.
