The English Reformation

77

Jon reviews the contributions of Thomas Cranmer to the reformation of the Church of England. Cranmer created the first book of common prayer for England under Edward VI. Over the course of the next series of revisions, the book of common prayer reflected the progress of reformation. But then Edward dies and Mary, a stanch Roman Catholic, takes the throne and begins an extensive persecution of Protestants. Many English Protestants flee to Geneva where they and Calvin's followers produce the Geneva Bible. Mary dies without an heir, making way for one of the greatest and well known monarchs in English history, Queen Elizabeth I.
