How to Defeat the Desire for Revenge

Why do we feel justified when we do wrong when we are wronged? And just as universal (and natural) as this feeling is, it is also universally acknowledged that revenge is self-destructive. How do we explain this? And then what do we do about it? Is it good enough to simply not return the wrong that is done to us, or are believers in Christ expected to do more?
