The selection of the deacons

The ‘magnificent seven’ of Acts 6.1-7 - the proto-deacons - were not a carnal solution, neither did the church make a carnal selection.

A number of key features emerge as we look at the kind of men who were entrusted with the administration of the practical and compassionate labours of Christ’s church. They were men of quality, humility, responsibility, authority, spirituality, charity, integrity, capability, activity, and reliability. With such men handling the demands laid upon them, and the apostles giving themselves continually to prayer and the ministry of the Word, the church of Christ saw much blessing.
