Benefits of our English Bible

On 2nd May 1611 the Authorised Version of the Bible was first published and put on sale.

The work of translating the Authorised Version had commenced six and a half years earlier at the end of 1604. By the early part of 1611 the revision was complete and on 2nd May 1611 the final completed new translation was published.

The Authorised Version was published by Robert Barker, the King's Printer, as a complete folio Bible. 'Folio' refers to a recognised size of about 15 inches or 38 cms high.

The new translation was sold looseleaf for 10 shillings, or bound for 12 shillings. To get some idea of what that would be in today's terms it is worthwhile observing that the Archbishop of Dublin in 1611 was paid 40 shillings per annum.
