Doctrine of Excommunication: Jesus' Teaching on Judgment

188

In this sermon on the doctrine of excommunication, Dr. Brunson discusses the Lord Jesus Christs' teaching on judgment as it relates to excommunication in the church of God.

From this sermon:

"Today, we come to the teaching of the Lord Jesus Christ as it relates to the doctrine of excommunication. And we begin in the gospel of Matthew chapter seven, verse one. We note in verse one Jesus speaks in the imperative and says, 'Do not judge in order that (or so that) you will not be judged, for with the same judgement you judge you shall be judged and with the same measure you measure you shall be measured.' This is the most familiar of Christ's teaching on judgement. However, like most of the familiar teachings of Christ it is grossly misunderstood by the public at large. The public at large knows this verse and quotes it frequently to condemn those who make moral judgements about immoral ideas or acts suggesting that no one has the right to judge another's thoughts, to judge another's words or to judge another's deeds. To the contrary, the truth is that those who quote this verse so quickly to forbid Christians' judgements of immorality, ironically (yet they would not admit this)...ironically quote this verse to defend sin and to defend sinners in their sin and probably to defend sin in themselves and to ward off Christians and churches from judging them and to deny Christians and churches the Biblical authority that they have to make judgement about and against sin."
