Having the knowledge of good and evil was one of a horrible punishments that have come upon man. God in effect was merciful for allowing death to come upon man, so that he would not live forever in this horrible condition (Ge. 3:22-24). He sent His son to change this condition and reconcile man to God whereas he would choose good and refuse evil.
