Work, Rest and the Compassion of Jesus
Series The Gospel of Mark
Jesus sent the disciples out to minister and they were so busy preaching, healing the sick and casting out demons that they didn't even have time to eat. They came back to report to him and he called them to rest for awhile. Here we see the balance of work and rest and particularly the legitimacy of rest. We examine the obstacles to rest. Why won't we rest? We also see the sympathy of Jesus. The period of rest didn't last long because the crowd saw them leave in the boat and ran to the other side to wait for them. Instead of being irritated, Jesus had compassion on the crowd. He saw that they were like sheep without a shepherd and taught them many things. We have a compassionate Savior why sympathizes with human weakness and need and condescends to help them even when they are disturbing His plans for rest. What a Savior!
