The Light of the World

At the Feast of Tabernacles, Jesus Christ declares Himself to be the light of the world. In doing so, He proclaims Himself to be God, the exclusive light of the world. This declaration also implies the depravity of man, because the world walks in darkness. All men need the light of the world, Jesus Christ.

Jesus also tells us that the way of life is in obedience to Him. We are not saved by our works, but all who truly believe in Him will follow Him, which means ongoing obedience.

Though the Pharisees do not accept His testimony, Christ insists that His testimony and the testimony of God the Father satisfies the requirement of the Law of Moses to have at least two witnesses. We also see the sovereignty of God displayed in the fact that, although the enemies of Christ wanted to kill Him at this time, no one could lay a hand on Him. God would not allow His Son to die, except at the prescribed time and in the prophesied way -- on the cross for our sins.
