Church Membership

186
  1. The WHAT Of Church Membership

Generally, being a member of anything is a putting yourself into, and a receiving of you by others - of that society, organisation etc - agreeing to the principles it abides by and partaking of the benefits of that organisation. So with Church membership, only on a greater scale.

2nd Cor 8:5 "gave their own selves"
Commitment to others of like faith, through good and bad times.

  1. The WHO Of Church Membership

Only Christians.

2nd Cor 8:5 "first gave their own selves to the Lord, and unto us" - they gave themselves to the Lord FIRST, then to the others.

This is the standard that the Bible sets forth. One cannot be a member of a Church without first being saved.

Many across the land are in positions in the Church and have never been born again, and freely admit it, because they do not believe in salvation.

  1. The WHY Of Church Membership

i) It is a RATIONAL practice.
Elders, deacons, ministers are chosen, or elected by members of the Church. If there were no members, this would be impossible. Also, only those who hold membership can come into these offices.

ii)It is a SCRIPTURAL practice

Acts 9:26 - Paul, who once hated the Church, now wanted to join with the disciples. "Join" has the meaning of a bonding - like glue.

Are you not saved ? Make sure you are a member of the Great Church Invisible - that is, repent of your sin, trust Christ as your Saviour, and you will become part of the "Body of Christ"
