The great sin of the Pharisees, which sin infected most of the nation of Israel at the time of Christ, was the gross sin of self-righteousness and contempt for the heathen. The Pharisees had no compassion for the lost or for sinners. Although Jesus is teaching about having compassion upon lost sinners, addressing the gross sin of self-righteousness is the primary focus of the parables of three lost things. This is certainly the main emphasis of the parable of two sons. Although all sin is a failure at righteousness, self-righteousness is the grossest and the most ignorant of all sins.
