Jesus' Last Passover Supper

42

Jesus gathered with his Twelve disciple on the first day of the Feast of Unleavened Bread for the Passover Meal as commanded by God through Moses. It commemorated by means of a ordered ritual meal the deliverance of the Hebrews from slavery in Egypt by means of the blood of a sacrificial lamb whose blood was applied to their dwellings. When the death angel went through the land in judgment those who were in their homes with the covered blood were passed over and then brought out the next day. This was in fulfillment of God's promise in Exodus 6:6-8: " Therefore tell the children of Israel, 'I am Yahweh, and I will bring you out from under the burdens of the Egyptians, and I will rid you out of their bondage, and I will redeem you with an outstretched arm, and with great judgments. I will take you to myself for a people. I will be your God; and you shall know that I am Yahweh your God, who brings you out from under the burdens of the Egyptians. I will bring you into the land which I swore to give to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob; and I will give it to you for a heritage: I am Yahweh.'"

Jesus is now to go to the cross and literally be the true Passover Lamb who brings deliverance from sin and judgment by his shed blood. Taking two elements from the Passover meal, Jesus gives his followers the sign of the New Covenant in a meal we call the "Lord's Supper." Mark 14:22-24 states, "As they were eating, he took bread, blessed and broke it, gave it to them, and said, "Take it; this is my body." Then he took a cup, and after giving thanks, he gave it to them, and they all drank from it. He said to them, "This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many."
