It is Finished! Hark, the Voice of Love and Mercy!

72

According to Matthew's unique account in Matt. 27:50-54, in response to the Son's victorious proclamation of "It is finished!" the Father proclaimed "Amen!" in a tremendous fashion: the veil was rent; the earth was rent; graves were rent; and hearts were rent.

This sermon looks at the purpose and meanings behind these powerful miracles, while, at the same time, explaining the sound biblical expression of the great hymn, "Hark the Voice of Love and Mercy".

I. It Is Finished? (Jn 19:30; Mt 27:50)
----Suffering, Work, Prophecies, Atonement...finished!
II. Veil was Rent (Mt 27:51a)
III. Earth was Rent (Mt 27:51b)
IV. Graves were Rent (Mt 27:52-53)
V. Hearts were Rent (Mt 27:54)

Hark! The voice of love and mercy
Sounds aloud from Calvary;
See, it rends the rocks asunder,
Shakes the earth, and veils the sky:
"It is finished!" (3x)
Hear the dying Savior cry. (2x)

"It is finished!" O what pleasure
Do these precious words afford;
Heavenly blessings, without measure,
Flow to us from Christ the Lord:
"It is finished!" (3x)
Saints the dying words record. (2x)

Finished all the types and shadows
Of the ceremonial law;
Finished all that God had promised;
Death and hell no more shall awe:
"It is finished!" (3x)
Saints, from hence your comfort draw. (2x)

Tune your harps anew, ye seraphs,
Join to sing the glorious theme;
All in earth, and all in heaven,
Join to praise Emmanuel's Name:
Alleluia! (3x)
Glory to the bleeding Lamb! (2x)
