Courting the Demonic

347

Is it okay to eat meat sacrificed to idols? Is it okay to get a free meal in the pagan's temple? We know there is no god behind that idol. We know that we have been set free from laws and rules through Christ.

Paul doesn't give a direct answer. Love needs to trump knowledge. Caring for a tender conscience is more important than broadening someone's mind. Limit freedoms so to make known the gospel of freedom. Don't abuse or presume upon grace. Grace wasn't given for your indulgence in freedoms but as an aid to your witness in the world. Paul doesn't give a direct answer to the questions but instead lays down some important principles for them. He doesn't give a direct answer in Chapter 8 or 9 or the first half of 10. He doesn't give a direct answer until now.

Here is the answer: He could have given this so much sooner but this was a teaching moment and there were other matters to address… like love, prizing the witness of the gospel, understanding the purposes of grace. Now he says it plainly. Don't eat meat that you know has been offered to idols. Don't join in meals in the temple precincts. Don't do it. Flee the expressions of idolatry.
You are courting the Demonic!
