A Qualified/Disqualified Pastor

184

What is on your résumé? Most likely it lists your abilities and life achievements. It communicates concisely how your abilities meet an organization’s needs. It is interesting what God wants on our "church résumé" as servants. In His church, He wants our resumes to focus not on our abilities but on our personal character.

Personal character is an overlooked but integral part to any leader. It is true in government, business, family, and in the church as well. God placed in His Word a list of qualifications that a man must meet before they serve as a pastor.

As we consider these qualifications, we will learn that they are all about a person’s character even more than they are about a person’s ability. Who you are is more important than what you are able to do. Our character is what God is determined to change as He makes us more like His Son, Jesus. We will examine these character qualifications tomorrow, and find that they are remarkably normal. They are qualities that should be true of all Christians. And therefore, they are instructive not just for a church and pastor but for every Christian as we consider what God desires in Christian character.
